A Bold Proposal for a New Economy

by John Cavanagh

The free market guru Milton Friedman understood what so many progressives do not: that crises create opportunities for radical change. Naomi Klein called this the "Shock Doctrine." One of Friedman's opportunities was the brutal 1973 coup in Chile, which opened the door for the market-opening fundamentalism that Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher then pushed around the world in the 1980s.

Today, the global and U.S. financial meltdowns offer such an opportunity for progressives. A progressive shock doctrine.

Reagan in Perspective

Happy Birthday Ronald Reagan (Thanks for Ruining America)

By William Kleinknecht

Reagan rolled back a century of progressive advances. And now we're seeing the results of his terrible policies more clearly than ever.

Ronald Reagan's 98th birthday is being celebrated today at a time that should be a cause for soul searching among his admirers. The conservative revolution that Reagan unleashed upon the nation and much of the world lay in ashes, and Washington is embarking on a new epoch of government intervention to eradicate the excesses of free-market purism. One would expect liberals to be out in the streets looking for statues of the Gipper to topple from their pedestals.

But nothing of the kind is happening. While George W. Bush is now the bane even of many conservatives, a Marine Corps contingent will lay a wreath at Reagan's gravesite safe in the knowledge that much of the nation holds his memory in a warm embrace.

Death of a Hero
Book Reviews Published December 21, 2008 by The Telegraph -- www.telegraph.co.uk

General George S. Patton was assassinated to silence his criticism of allied war leaders claims new book

George S. Patton, America's greatest combat general of the Second World War, was assassinated after the conflict with the connivance of US leaders, according to a new book.

By Tim Shipman in Washington

The newly unearthed diaries of a colourful assassin for the wartime Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, reveal that American spy chiefs wanted Patton dead because he was threatening to expose allied collusion with the Russians that cost American lives.

The death of General Patton in December 1945, is one of the enduring mysteries of the war era. Although he had suffered serious injuries in a car crash in Manheim, he was thought to be recovering and was on the verge of flying home.

Still Going Strong
Book Reviews Published December 16, 2008 by the Times Online -- www.timesonline.com

Cheeta going ape in the Hollywood jungle
Tarzan's sidekick Cheeta is alive and well and spitting blood about his fellow stars in his autobiography undefined

Damian Barr

The standard caveats issued before any A-list interview do not usually include the warning: “Don't come close. He's got the strength of five men. He'll go for the fingers, then the testicles.” No, it's not Russell Crowe on a bender or Mel Gibson in a manic moment. This star has worked, and partied, with Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin and Katharine Hepburn, to name-drop just a few. He's Hollywood royalty. He's also naked.

Enter Cheeta the chimpanzee, the furry sidekick to Johnny Weissmuller in 12 Tarzan movies. I gasp. This is no capering cutesy little ape. He stands more than 4ft tall and his head is huge. Grey hair covers his knowing face. “I shave him as part of our bonding,” says Dan Westfall, handing Cheeta one of the bananas I have brought.

Antidotes to Plunder

A Holiday Reading List

By RALPH NADER

It's time for that Holiday reading period and here are some deserving but little publicized recommendations:

1. Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Spectre of Inverted Totalitarianism by Sheldon S. Wolin (Princeton Univ. Press, 2008). Princeton Professor emeritus Wolin examines how the pathology of concentrated corporate power and its control of government is shattering our democratic institutions and traditions. Brings the abstractions down to the hard earth of reality.

Spies 'R US
Book Reviews Published December 4, 2008 by Inter Press Service North America -- www.ipsnorthamerica.net

Cloak-and-Dagger, Inc.

Pratap Chatterjee

VANCOUVER, Canada, 4 Dec (IPS) - When Barack Obama visits the Virginia headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in the not-too-distant future, he might want to scan the room to see how many of them sport green badges, the telltale sign that they are contractors and not federal employees.

At the dozen or so other intelligence agencies scattered around the Washington area, like the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Pennsylvania Avenue or the Maryland-based National Security Agency, he is likely to find quite a number are from the private sector.

A recent federal survey identified some 37,000 private employees in the intelligence sector who work side-by-side with civil servants as analysts, technology specialists and mission managers. About a quarter of this number are involved in the cloak-and-dagger activities of intelligence collection and operations. Indeed, well over half of the 66 billion dollars spent on intelligence in the United States is believed to go to private military contractors that range from the very well known Boeing and Lockheed to much more obscure companies like Anteon, LPA and Verint Systems.

Why We Keep Making the Same Mistakes

Learning From Past Disasters, Preventing Future Ones
Foreword to Flirting With Disaster: Why Accidents Are Rarely Accidental

by Daniel Ellsberg

I have participated in several major organizational catastrophes. The most well known of them is the Vietnam War. I was aware on my first visit to Vietnam in 1961 that the situation there — a failing neocolonial regime we had installed as a successor to French rule — was a sure loser in which we should not become further involved. Yet a few years later, I found myself participating as a high-level staffer in a policy process that lied both the public and Congress into a war that, unbeknownst to me at the time, experts inside the government accurately predicted would lead to catastrophe.

Rescuing Sprite ... a MUST Read
Book Reviews Since Mark Levin wrote his book, "Rescuing Sprite,"many people have come forward and out of the closet with their unique 'problem.' Me too. Mark Levin, no matter his politics, is a rather nasty sounding Talk Radio Conservative who one would never believe by listening to his rants, has one hell of a sensitive emotional system when it comes to HIS problem.

What's the problem?

We who love our doggies, salute each other. See, to love a doggy or any pet, one must be an emotional sort or fail miserably at having such a wonderful friend in his or her home. I have my little French Bulldog, Pepe.

Mark's little guy was adopted from a shelter. Yours (if'n you are one of us) is probably just a mutt. Doesn't matter. But one thing I can tell you, Pepe is the one and only thing I can think of which the French made just right.
